Custom Ductile Iron Fittings | Small Quantity Project Case
A Dubai customer needed small quantities of custom ductile iron double-flanged wall pipes with a special green coating and 1-inch water meter connections. See how we solved the customization challenge

Custom Ductile Iron Fittings for Small-Quantity Projects: A Dubai Customer Case
Custom ductile iron fittings are not always difficult because of the product itself.
Sometimes the real challenge is quantity.
A customer may need only a small number of fittings, but still require a special length, flange configuration, coating color, drilled connection, or other project-specific modification.
Many manufacturers are willing to customize a large production order. Far fewer are willing or able to handle a small project with several special requirements.
This was exactly the situation we encountered with one of our customers in Dubai.
The customer required custom ductile iron double-flanged wall pipes for a pipeline project. The quantities were relatively small, but the products needed a special green coating.
Later, another order required us to manufacture similar fittings according to the customer's drawings and add a 1-inch connection for water meter installation.
With our years of experience in pipeline products and customized fittings, we helped turn these small-quantity requirements into workable products.
The First Challenge: Custom Ductile Iron Double-Flanged Wall Pipes
The main products required by the customer were double-flanged wall pipes, a type of ductile iron fitting used where a pipeline passes through or connects around a wall or structural section.
Unlike a standard fitting purchased directly from a catalogue, project-specific wall pipes may involve several details that need to be confirmed together:
- Pipe diameter
- Overall length
- Flange dimensions
- Pressure rating
- Applicable standard
- Installation position
- Coating
- Special project dimensions
The customer's requirement was not simply to purchase a standard double-flanged pipe.
They needed a product made according to their actual project requirements.
The Bigger Problem: A Small Quantity With a Special Green Coating
The most difficult part of the first order was actually the surface color.
The customer required a special green finish.
For a large order, arranging a customized coating color is usually easier because the production quantity can justify a dedicated coating batch.
But this project required only a relatively small number of ductile iron fittings.
That creates a common sourcing problem:
How do you customize a special coating when the order quantity is too small for normal mass production?
This is where experience and supplier coordination become important.
Instead of simply telling the customer that the quantity was too small, we worked with our production resources to find a practical way to meet the required green finish.
The customer was able to receive the customized ductile iron products in the color required for the project without having to increase the order to an unnecessary quantity.
Why Small-Quantity Ductile Iron Customization Is Difficult
Ductile iron products are very different from simple catalogue items.
Producing customized fittings may involve:
- Casting
- Machining
- Flange processing
- Dimensional control
- Drilling
- Surface preparation
- Coating
- Inspection
- Packaging
When the quantity is large, these processes can be incorporated into normal production.
When the quantity is small, however, factories may be reluctant to change tooling, arrange special machining, mix a custom coating color, or interrupt standard production.
This is why buyers sometimes receive the answer:
“The quantity is too small for customization.”
Our approach is different.
For small custom projects, we first determine which parts genuinely require custom manufacturing and which parts can be solved through machining, fabrication, coating, or modification of an appropriate base product.
That can make a small custom order much more practical.
A Second Requirement: Adding a 1-Inch Water Meter Connection
The cooperation continued with another customized requirement.
This time, the customer needed an additional 1-inch connection on the ductile iron pipe for water meter installation.
The customer provided a drawing showing the required position and dimensions.
This sounds like a simple request:
“Just make a 1-inch hole.”
But for a pipeline component, it should not be treated as simply drilling a hole.
We needed to understand:
- The exact position of the connection
- The required 1-inch interface
- How the water meter would be installed
- The orientation of the connection
- The pipe dimensions
- Whether the modification would interfere with other components
- The customer's drawing requirements
We reviewed the drawing and coordinated the machining according to the customer's design.
Even though the order quantity was small, we were able to complete the required modification.
Drawings Turn an Idea Into a Manufacturable Product
For customized pipeline products, drawings are extremely useful.
A buyer may know exactly how a product needs to work but may not know how to describe every manufacturing detail.
A drawing allows us to confirm:
- Dimensions
- Hole position
- Connection size
- Flange orientation
- Overall length
- Special machining
- Installation relationship
For the Dubai customer's water-meter connection, the drawing gave us the information needed to turn a special site requirement into a manufacturable product.
This is why we encourage customers with non-standard requirements to send us their drawings, sketches, photographs, samples, or installation dimensions.
Custom Does Not Always Mean Large Quantity
One of the biggest misunderstandings in industrial sourcing is that customized products must always be ordered in large quantities.
For some products, tooling and production requirements do create minimum quantities.
But not every customization requires a completely new mold or a large production run.
Depending on the product, we may be able to handle small-quantity customization through:
- Dimensional modification
- Additional machining
- Custom drilling
- Threaded connections
- Flange modification
- Special coating
- Custom marking
- Fabrication
- Customized packaging
The first question should therefore not simply be:
“What is your MOQ?”
A better question is:
“How can this particular product be made in the quantity my project actually needs?”
What Can Be Customized on Ductile Iron Fittings?
Depending on the product and project requirements, customization can include:
Custom Requirement | Examples |
|---|---|
Dimensions | Special length or project-specific dimensions |
Flanges | Required drilling, pressure rating or standard |
Connections | Additional outlets or interfaces |
Machining | Holes, threaded connections or other processing |
Coating | Special project color or coating requirement |
Marking | Customer or project identification |
Packaging | Project-specific or export packaging |
Quantity | Small project batches where technically feasible |
Not every customization is possible for every product, but we are willing to review the requirement before deciding.
More Than Ductile Iron Fittings
Our experience with customized pipeline products is not limited to this Dubai project.
Over the years, we have worked with different requirements involving:
- Ductile iron fittings
- Double-flanged pipes
- Wall pipes and puddle pipes
- Flanged pipeline components
- Malleable iron fittings
- Steel pipe fittings
- Threaded steel nipples
- Valves
- PVC and PE pipeline products
- Other project-specific pipeline components
Different materials require different solutions.
Our strength is understanding pipeline products well enough to determine what needs to match, what can be modified, and what manufacturing process is appropriate for the customer's requirement.
Why Pipeline Experience Matters for Custom Products
A customized pipeline component cannot be evaluated only by appearance.
Before production, several questions may need to be answered:
Will the flange connect correctly?
Is the nominal diameter based on the correct standard?
Is the pressure rating suitable?
Is the special outlet positioned correctly?
Does the thread match the customer's equipment?
Does the coating meet the project requirement?
Will the customized component still fit the surrounding pipeline?
These are the kinds of details that become easier to identify after many years of working with different pipeline systems.
Our goal is to identify these questions before production, rather than after the products arrive at the project site.

FAQ
Can you customize ductile iron fittings in small quantities?
It depends on the product and customization required. Some small-quantity requirements can be handled through machining, fabrication, coating, or modification without requiring a large production batch.
Can you produce a special color for ductile iron fittings?
Special coating colors can be discussed according to the product, quantity, coating requirement, and production conditions. Our Dubai project included a special green finish for a relatively small order.
Can you add a connection for a water meter?
Special outlets or connections can be evaluated according to the product design. Drawings showing the required position, size, and installation method are very helpful.
Can you manufacture according to our drawing?
Yes. Drawings are one of the best ways to evaluate customized pipeline products because they allow critical dimensions and special features to be confirmed before production.
What information should I provide for a custom ductile iron fitting?
Please provide the product type, material, diameter, length, flange requirements, pressure rating, standard, coating, quantity, drawings, and any special machining or connection requirements.
What if I only need a few pieces?
Send us the requirement first. Small quantity does not automatically mean customization is impossible. We can evaluate whether there is a practical manufacturing or modification solution.
Need a Custom Pipeline Product?
If you need a pipeline component that is not available as a standard catalogue product, send us the requirement.
Maybe you need:
- A special length
- A special flange
